HANNIBAL 247-183 BC CARTHAGINIAN GENERAL Synopsis: Hannibal’s leading the Carthaginian army across the Alps stands as one of the most monumental feats in ancient military history. Often called the ‘father of military strategy’ for his visionary conduct of warfare, Hannibal was able to sustain a 15-yr campaign against Rome because of his innovative cavalry tactics. Background: Hannibal was born in 247 BC in Carthage and studied under his father Hamilcar Barca. During the first Punic war 264-241 BC, he accompanied his father to Spain to fight against the Ro . . .
He did not employ intelligence or counter intelligence and this lead to the death of his brother. Columns of horsemen could divide into smaller groups and exploit weaknesses or pass through each other and surround strong points. Military Career: In 221 BC, Hannibal assumed control of the Carthaginian forces and within 2 years had conquered Spain. Hannibal asked his brother, Hasdrubal, commander of an army in Spain to assist him, but the enemy learnt of the plan: Hasdrubal’s force was ambushed and Hasdrubal was killed. In my opinion, Genghis Khan is the better as he easily ranks as one of the all-time most influential military leaders in history, portrayed the qualities of greatness and was never defeated in battle. Heavy cavalry warriors, armed with lance and sword and protected by leather helmets and breastplates, made up almost half of Khan's army. Military Career: While the number of the young leader's alliances were still small, a rival tribe, the Merkits, raided Temujin's camp and kidnapped his wife. Over sixty and in failing health, Khan attempted to return to Mongolia from a campaign to put down a revolt in China but died during his journey. Hannibal then organized a new army of 50,000 and marched against the invading Romans. In this battle, more than 50,000 Romans died while Hannibal lost less than 7,000 of his men. Khan's sons and other trusted family and clan members assumed the senior leadership positions and enforced rigid training and discipline. Temujin increased his efforts to unite neighboring families and within a year defeated the Merkits and rescued his spouse. This bold, rapid offensive is the first example of "blitzkrieg" warfare that would typify combat for centuries.
