Columbus
Columbus in his letter gives a detailed description of the island, Hispaniola. He talks about how he went about exploring the island first by following its coastline. He then moves on to describe the natural beauty of the island its rivers, fertile lands, its cattle, palm trees, harbors and so on. After this he studies the behavior of the natives, he notices that they don't wear any clothing, don't believe in idolatry, they are not familiar with the use of iron and steel, don't own personal property and believe in single marriages. In the end he seeks the blessing of the King and finishes.Columbus is writing this letter to give the King and Queen the good news that he has captu

Assignment 2Article chosen : Dead Reckoning NavigationThe author's argument in this article is that Columbus used the dead reckoning method to navigate instead of the celestial navigation. The facts that he uses to support this argument are several. People might argue that Columbus could have corrected his compasses, but the author sites an example where had he corrected his compass he would have traveled a significantly different route between Samana Bay and Santa Maria Island. Therefore in order to restore order Sir Thomas Gates came out with these stringent laws which were all aimed at gaining respect for God. The second argument is that Columbus' ships were steered by helmsmen who could not see the stars , therefore they could not use celestial navigation. All these facts convince me to believe that Columbus used dead reckoning and not celestial navigation. Using this letter Columbus tries to convince the leadership back home to actively think about colonizing these islands. This had led to a terrible winter where they had no food and disease had taken several lives. The paper will discuss various factors that acted as catalysts in making the Atlantic Slave trade happen. The Atlantic slave trade was encouraged due to several factors which include tehnological advances, economic desires and political motives.
