Thesis: Written while awaiting his execution in prison, Boethius' narrative is an attempt to synthesize literal imprisonment, create a metaphor for exploring the soul's resources, and examine how the soul is exiled. Boethius then finds the emergence of philosophy during a time of existential disorder, brought about by restlessness and unhappiness about the state of society. Through philosophy, Boethius searches for peace, consolation, and enlightenmen
He continues to wallow in self-pity over his situation, Philosophy seeing his despair, suggests that his true source of despair is from within himself. This first section is concerned with the diagnosis of Boethius' wound, as he perceives his imprisonment to be the result of "the wicked [overcoming] the innocent in the sight of God" (p. Philosophy is in a lot of ways a source of Hope, however at this point I don't think Boethius realizes it yet. Philosophy diagnoses Boethius by telling him that "it is not simply a case of your being banished far from your home; you have wandered away from yourself" (p. [seeming] wise beyond the ordinary wisdom of men" (p. He is still clouded by his loss of fortune and betrayal of colleagues. In Book One of The Consolation Of Philosophy, Boethius is in despair over his situation and has turned to the Muses of Poetry as his only supposed comfort, however Philosophy appears as "a woman of majestic countenance. t as he struggles to find a meaning between life and death. I think Philosophy is a form of psychiatry for the soul, she is here as a form of imaginary friend to help console Boethius, by bringing him back from his misery of exile.
