             Generation X has been described as lazy, whinny, self-absorbed, slackers with McJob's, but it seems this generation is a product of greed. "Generation X," is technically defined as the generation following the Baby Boomers." Although the age group varies depending on the source, it lies somewhere "between 1965 and 1980...now ranging in age from 17-32 and usually being judged by characteristics assigned to them by the media." Douglas Coupland first used the term when he wrote a book in 1991. Coupland came up with the title from another book, "Class" by Paul Fussell. Fussell used "X" to describe a group of people that look at "the meaning of life" in another way. Coupland writes in his book, "resists being pigeon-holed by demographics and targeted by advertisers."
             The characters in Coupland's book resembled these traits, and so he cashed in and titled the book Generation X. The rest of the media quickly latched on and continued the exploitation. The very generation that later complained that MTV was ruining America's youth were the very people that created it. A Generation is defined as a group of people from living at the same time or of approximately the same age sharing similar experiences in life. Without movies like Slacker, released in the same year as Coupland's book, or The Doom Generation (1995) to propel the label, the movement and the money would have soon died out.
             Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and Sonic Youth started to replace AC/DC, Bon Jovi, and Def Leppard. Instead of being all about hair product and extravagant outfits, the superstars of music started to look like they had not showered in weeks and sang songs that were not always comprehendible.
