"Late Rising"
"Late Rising" by Jacques Prevert is an interesting look into the depths of a poor man's mind. It seems to really give that perspective and be able to look through this man's head. It was a very interesting poem full of wonderful words that really brought this wonderful yet savage poem to life. The poem begins "Terrible is the soft sound of a hardboiled egg cracking on a zinc counter and terrible is that sound when it moves in the memory of a man who is hungry." This brought in the realization that this man is obviously not in the best shape and is being tortured by the thought of food. There is alliteration in these lines, "...moves in the memory of a man who is hungry..." I think this is trying to stress the fact that the man once had all this food. He remembers the food and the wonderful tastes and smells. The next few lines go "Terrible also is the head of a man the head of a man hungry when he looks at six o'clock in the morning In a smart shop window and sees a head the color of dust but it is not the head he sees" These lines are talking about the head of this hungry man. I think it means in physical appearance but also in emotional appearance. I think because of this lack of food his mind is starti
Judging from the food he is talking about, he used to have very high taste. I also think that by only taking the money he needed for the food he is trying to make himself feel guilt-free of what he had just done by only taking the necessary amount of money. But after he has his food his mind clears and it's almost like he forgets what happened. This poem proves this down to the core. He's trying to prove to himself that he had the right to kill a man for his food. The core of a high- civilized man is that he wants to live and would do whatever it takes to stay alive. " This is almost like the first part except for the one word "soft" in the line "Terrible is the soft sound of a hardboiled egg cracking on a zinc counter. We know this because of the last few lines before saying things like "blood" and "crime" that he is willing to do anything it takes to get his food now no matter what the consequences are. " I think the reason Jacques did this is to show that his dream of food had then come a little bit more of a reality but its not quite there yet. When survival is on the line the consequences and policy become one big blur and life is all that is needed. In this way this man was selfish in taking another persons life instead of his own. Another example that he used to be in high society is the fact that the world didn't give him a chance to comeback to his old ways of better society. The last part "coffee crime black blood" seems to be the final straw where the consequences and his need is twisted and it no longer matters. Life means everything to people today and death would be the worst thing that happens to this man.
