Otters
Victims received justice for the crimes committed against them by criminals through the judicial systems and the laws of the Constitution, but where is the justice for the crime we humans commit against wildlife, in particular otters. People do not really know the extreme danger otters are confronted with day in and day out. Otters are imperiled by their struggle with fishermen for sea; urchins are hunted for their fur, and smother and die in pollution. We as humans must live by the words of Jewell "Praying Wolf" James, acknowledging, "All things are interconnected." In one word, what happens to otters and other natural beings will eventually happen to us. The lives of otters need to be held in high regard, and the only way their innocent lives can be saved is when we humans stop being careless and start to care about the gifts of Mother Nature.Otters are sea mammals. Yet a problem with many sea mammals is that they cannot live in the ocean peacefully because of fishermen. It has been reported that, "Over a recent ten-year period, some 100 sea otters have drowned each year after becoming entangled in fishermen's gill nets and trammel nets (Nickerson 7)." There is a heavy competition for the sea urchin between otters and fisherme
Petroleum devastations in waters in which sea otters live can erase entire species. A former California University zoologist states, "During the peak years of California sea otters hunting - between 1768 and 1868 - more than 200,000 were killed (Nickerson 37)". " Hunted for fur, to be worn as hats, clothes, and coats otters were killed violently and viciously everywhere. His war against nature is inevitably a war against himself. As if fishermen were not a big enough problem, in the past hunters acquiring fur, targeted otters. They were put on earth by God and were not meant to be destroyed by man. In 1980s federal officials, moved sea otters to the San Nicholas Island in order to give them more range to live. Monterey Bay Aquarium web site states, "Oil robs an otter's fur of it insulating properties, so most oiled otters die of hypothermia. the animal was hunted almost to extinction for its fur (Overend). It is very different to move the other. Hunters, back to the 18th century, specially targeted otters for their fur because they were as "gold nuggets (Nickerson 10). Although there are laws for otters' protection, there are few enforceable laws for otters against oil spills and pollution.
