Management

Just as the processes, skills and systems of the agricultural era were removed to meet the demands of the industrial era; new ways are today being sought to take advantage of the opportunities offered by the information age. This new age has brought with it a host of changes particularly in the way people are led. Traditional career structures no longer exist and managers are required to take more responsibility for their own development. They are expected to coach and empower rather than to control, and temporary roles and competencies are replacing job descriptions. Flexible contracts are becoming the norm and traditional systems of hierarchy are giving way to flatter structures based on processes and teams (Jones). If leaders are to keep pace with workplace changes of individual accountability, global competitiveness and continuous learning, they need to adopt new leadership approaches and philosophies such as those described above. This new approach is necessary for the trend to globalisation is probably the most important issue affecting Australian leaders in the 21st century.Transformational leadership is a popular and current c

Those people who represent Generation "X" and "Y" have greater exposure to rapid change and the onset of globalisation. This recommendation is based on an analysis of interviews with senior Australian executives, which resulted in the generation of a model of "breakthrough leadership". Trait TheoriesMany people have written about great leaders and their leadership skills. transforming leadership ultimately becomes moral in that it raises the level of human conduct and ethical aspiration of both leader and the led, and thus it has a transforming effect on both. This connection is manifested through the genuine concern the leaders have for their followers and the followers giving their trust in return. They have argued that leadership is not inherent within an individuals genetic make that it cannot be taught but that it can be learned. Australians like to see themselves as an easy-going and athletic nation, and the habit of combining business with sport indicates this. " In order to overcome their warning, the leader's agenda must be uplifting and as Burns said, ". As these people progress throughout their organisations, they are more likely to utilise transformational styles of leadership and enable the changes to develop within the organisation that will hopefully improve organisational performance. Effective leaders also have a clear, highly individualised picture of the context in which they are operating and an understanding of the implications of their actions in influencing follower behaviour. When leaders and led are reading from the same page, all their energy is focused to achieve maximum results with less oversight, because the leader has articulated the target goal so everyone understands the direction to move toward. " As stated earlier, transformational leadership may be double-edged, however, with high moral values as ethics espoused by both leader and led, the dark side is mitigated and the forces for good are championed. Leaders have an inspirational vision. Tough markets for products and services drive ongoing major workplace change at a relentless pace. If you belong to the "Leadership can be taught" school then how can we cater for the needs of leaders within a comparatively small pool to draw on.
