To Kill A Mockingbird
Harper Lee, who wrote "To Kill A Mockingbird", lived in the south when she was younger. Many people say she based her stories on her personal experiences. This book is about a man named Tom Robinson. He was a black man accused of raping a white women named Mayella Ewell. The story takes place in the 1930's, in the town called Maycomb County, Alabama. A lot of people didn't have much money at this time and it seemed like everyone had a garden. At this time a lot of white people hated black people. There were three kids that had fun throughout the story. But there were a lot of people that had many problems at this time. Take Tom for example. He was accused of doing something that he didn't do. The center character of the book was Scout. Throughout the book she went from an immature girl to a mature lady. Jem, who was Scouts older brother, was the kind of kid that kept Scout from getting into trouble. Atticus Finch was Jem and Scouts father. He was also Tom Robinson's lawyer. Scout had an aunt that she didn't like too much. Her name was Alexandre. Calpurnia was the Finchs' cook. She was a black woman that didn't like Scout to fight or act like a boy. And that is when Mayella's dad came home and looked though the window. Then Mayella asked him if he would fix a door for her. When they went in to fix the door, Tom saw there was no door that needed fixing. In this book, the Mockingbird represented Tom, because people only new him by what people heard or saw of him. At this time, Tom represented the black race in American society. They tend to stay away from white people except one. Bob Mayella's dad was very upset with her. They went into the jury room to decide a verdict, and then came back out. Atticus asked Tom what happened and Tom told him. Then Tom was called to the stand he told them what happened. The next person who was called to the stand was the sheriff.
