America the Beautiful
America is a beautiful place. America is composed of gorgeous landscapes and many diverse people. People who come to this land to seek happiness which they cannot find anywhere else or the right to say what they wish. From free speech to demonstrating on the white house lawn, if the citizens of this country don't like what's going on in our government they have a right to say so. Of any one person who shows us what the American dream can be its Martin Luther King, Jr. He wrote a speech that was read in Washington D.C. It is probably the most famous speech in American history. The "I Have a Dream" speech was written to motivate and educate Americans during the civil rights movement. Dr. King believed America had great potential. America was slow at allowing equal rights to ALL Americans and he felt that could change. Dr. King wrote, "Our Republic wrote the magnificent words of the Constitution... They were signing a promissory note to which every American was to fall heir... it is obvious today that America has defaulted on this note... a check which has come back marked "insufficient funds." (King) He says America wasn't holding there part of the bargain and he is correct. Today I b
" (Ginsberg) America went though a period where communism was growing through out the world and the government was a little paranoid about it coming to the United States. The story "Harrison Bergeron" deals with a future American government making people the same. Now is the rime to rise from the dark and desolate valley of segregation to the sunlit path of racial justice. He writes, "Who knew the bomb was gonna blow, Who know why the terrorists, Learned to fly in Florida, San Diego, Who make the credit cards, Who get the biggest tax cut, Who walked out of the Conference Against Racism. Now is the time to lift our nation from the quicksands of racial injustice to the solid rock of brotherhood" (King) He believed change was possible and the only way it could be achieved was by working together. I don't believe it would, and I think he doesn't either. Many people in America believe that being the same in every way is the answer to many problems in American society. It's called "The Vanishing American Hobo" and Kerouac talks about the role of hoboes in society. He writes of his hate towards the control America has over him, and blames America for holding him back. With terrorism the new type of war the government is getting a little paranoid about every Middle Eastern person coming into the country, not to mention all those people in Guantanamo. Kerouac writes, "In America there has always been a definite special idea of foot walking freedom going back to the days of Jim Bridger and Johnny Appleseed. People who are unhappy in settling down and staying in one place collecting material objects yearn to wander around, experiencing many lands and kinds of people. Jack Kerouac wrote a great story about hobos in America. He says, "Now is the time to make real the promises of democracy.
