raisin in the sun
Author Lorraine Hansbury borrowed the title of the play "A Raisin in the Sun" from the poem, "A Dream Deferred", by Langston Hughes, to refer to the dreams of the characters in the play. This play is about the dreams of the Younger family and how those dreams were deferred. Though Mama, Walter, Ruth and Beneatha Younger all lived in the same house, their dreams were all different. Mama dreamed of her children's dreams, and about buying a nice house. Walter set his dream on a liquor store with Mama's insurance money. Beneatha, on the other hand, wanted to become a doctor and Ruth, Walter's wife, wanted to be wealthy. Mama always devoted her life for her children. In a cramped living situation with a lifetime of hard work, she was waiting for her late husband's insurance money to arrive. On rec
The title of the play "A Raisin in the Sun" clearly expresses the dreams and desires of the Younger family and how each one of them ended up as "A Dream Deferred". Though their dreams were deferred, the play ends with a new hope by moving into the new house with Mama finally accepting that his son Walter had come into his manhood. eiving her insurance money of ten thousand dollars, she decided to spend three thousand dollars to buy a house in Clybourne Park and also planned to put some money in the bank for Beneatha's school. In conclusion, each member in Younger family had different dreams like Mama and new house, Beneatha and school, Walter and business, Ruth and wealth. Ruth dreamed about becoming wealthy and having a fine family. Walter, on the other hand, dreamed about starting his own liquor store business, so that he could provide for his family and make them proud of him. When he realized that he had lost all his money, Walters's dreams were also deferred. But, her dreams were crumbled when she heard that Walter had lost all the money without putting anything in the bank for her medical school. He gave her hope and wanted her to marry him and practice her medical career in his homeland Nigeria. Beneatha dreamed about going to medical school to become a doctor. Although Walter lost all his money and also her dream, Ruth forgave him and loved him and encouraged him to start everything over. Although she was able to buy the house, her dreams were deferred when she came to know that the remaining money was wasted by Walter's foolishness. This made Beneatha very sad and depressed, but her friend, Asagai, came over and consoled her. She was also happy that her husband had finally come back to reality. Since her husband was not successful in starting a business, Ruth's dreams of becoming wealthy was also shattered.
