Gattace

“Gattaca shows us the dangers of uncontrolled technology.”

I definitely feel that Gattaca illustrates this very well. This movie was made sometime ago and though genetic engineering and modification is something that has been around for some time now, it has progressed so much more in recent years, and it can be quite scary to some.

Gattaca presents a world that states most of our fears of what could result from genetic engineering. We see this through the apparent lack of humanity and oppressive society that Gattaca lies within; people cease to be human, genes replace identities, and the manufacturing of society functions on science in a cold manner. This point is demonstrated throughout the movie; many of the characters are presented as cold and institutionalized people--for example, when Vincent and Irene begin to develop their relationship it appears to be somewhat cold. Rather than first getting to know Vincent as a person Irene takes Vincent’s hair to be sequenced and sees that he is suitable to start a relationship with. The masses of perfectly groomed, identically black suited men and women filing into Gattaca, having no conversation or interaction with each other, create a sense that this society is a bleak

. . .

After watching this movie you become aware that much this very same type of biogenetic engineering is actually going on now, this is becoming more of a reality and increasingly more so in the future. “They used to say that a child conceived in love has a greater chance of happiness, they don’t say that anymore”. We are entering into a new world of technology that is going to give people in authority more power to control our lives. It looks like, as in Gattaca that the world is moving back towards a very class segregated society of the haves and have-nots, the intellectual and the servants. Like Vincent, we should not give up hope and just accept things the way they are. Some parents obtain this for their child for fear of them being kidnapped. Being able to know what might occur in your life and what you might be best suited for would be good but there is still the question of free will and the ability to do what a person wants with his or her life. Thus this will lessen terrorism and crime.

I believe that in spite of how dark the future seems with such advances of uncontrolled technology in the hands of people we don’t know or trust the human spirit, with the determination to overcome will somehow prevail. It is slightly similar to the monitoring bracelets that are available for children which keeps track of a child’s whereabouts through GPS. DNA gives the code for characteristics but not all disorders and psychological tendencies can be determined by it.

There already is an increasing amount of over-controlling elements in our society especially since 9/11 in the name of protecting us from the “threat of terrorism” we are losing our privacy due to a greater use of surveillance; listening devices used to pry into private communications (emails, phone), camera surveillance watching us constantly, and tracking devices that monitor everything. Likewise in this day and age, plastic surgery, botox injections and other such advanced technology have become massively accessible, particularly for those who have the money to spend on it. This way of operating appeared to be a bit out-dated and primitive, but looking at it from the perspective of Gattaca you realize that it is plainly human nature for the rich and powerful (although they are a minority) to want to control the masses; It has been that way for centuries. This tiny pin-sized mirco-chip, when implanted, contains the entire background and current information and data of a person.
