Violence in America

             The views explored by director Michael Moore of violence in America, in his film Bowling for columbine does intersect with the findings of author Barbra Ehrenreich's in her novel Nickel and Dimed. Based on the film Bowling for columbine Michael Moore seems to blame most of the violence in America in part to the influence that society has on guns and also the accessibility at which guns can be obtained. In Barbra Ehrenreich's novel she explores the life of a person trying to live on a low level wage job as she is the one filling in the shoes. Both of the ideas held by Moore and Ehrenreich intersect due in part to how working in a level wage job does lead towards many different problems, problems which may be incorporated with Moore's film that revolves around violence.
             Exploring the reasons of why America is so violent in Bowling for columbine, Michael Moore seems to show the ease at which a gun or gun ammo can be obtained. By walking into a bank and becoming a member through a deposit Moore was able to receive a rifle as a membership gift. On a later scene he visited a barbershop where he was able to purchase ammo for his rifle or for any other weapon that they had ammo to. Those two scenes proved to show the alarming accessibility of how being able to own a gun or having ammo for a weapon is possible in a simple and at the same time dangerous way. Gaining access to a weapon in such a manner is a sure way to increase violence in this country. Another reason by which Moore feels that this country is so violent is because of news coverage by the media. Fear is cooked up by the media, fear of events that may take place are informed to be things that will actually happen. This instills fear in the minds of many people and can create a sense of panic causing someone to want protection which may mean to go out and purchase a gun.
