9/11

             With the events of 9/11 have the people of the United States been attacked by an outside force that was out to damage the country and its people severely. When terrorists kidnapped full planes to destroy buildings that symbolized the various strength-monopoles of America, such as the Pentagon and the Twin Towers, was the world in shock. The people mostly portrayed in the media coverage were certainly the people of New York City, who now had to regard their home country and hometown in different images. They lost their feeling of security and had to acknowledge that their city and its image as perfect American city could easily be destroyed. New York as the symbol of American economical and political success and security has lost its image as undefeatable and represents now the new America, whose taks it is to secure world freedom.
             The following paper will deal with some of these new images that have built up around the city of New York and its inhabitants. On the example of Mike Bellone I will show how ordinary people were influenced by 9/11 and how their active part in the history of the United States has changed their feeling of normality. Furthermore am I going to show how the image of New York City as the typical American threshold has changed due to the attacks on the American people and freedom.
             The story of Mike Bellone was featured in the Berliner Zeitung on July 2nd 2004. He is one of the many whose lives were and still are deeply affected and shaped by 9/11 and its aftermath. According to the article was Mr. Bellone one of Hundreds of volunteers who spent months searching for the victims of the attacks. Back than was Mike important. He hang out with the firemen, even became a uniform due to his passionate involvement. People hugged him on the streets and assured him that what he was doing was appreciated and respected.
