             A room as a symbol for a woman's condition
             The story "The Yellow Wallpaper" by Charlotte Perkins Gilman tells us about a woman who was taken by her husband to live in a house in the village; a colonial mansion, which she says is a hunted house. The woman, who is the narrator in the story, is mentally ill, or at least that is what she was told by her husband, and allegedly that is the reason for them moving to this house. She is being kept in the house all day, not allowed to go out, meet people, or write. She is first convinced this really is what is best for her. She is repeating her husband's words and trying to convince herself that is the truth- she should not go out, see people, and especailly write, since all these are not good for her nervouse condition. Since she spends so many hours of her day in her room, she talks a lot about the room and her feelings and condition in it. She first hates the room and especially the wallpaper. After a strong opposition on her husband's side on moving to a different room, she understands she would have to stay in this dreadful room, and decides she does not hate the room so much, only the wallpaper. She feels like the paper is looking at her, and she starts to do the same- stare at it and investigate. Very soon the wallpaper becomes her center of attention, and she cannot be disconnected; she seems tied to the paper and to the figures she sees in it. As time goes by for her in the room, she starts questioning her husband's idea more and more. She does not agree with all he does anymore, and even tries to write from time to time. She starts to understand her real condition, which is her imprisonment by her husband. She does not say it clearly, but we observe her realization through the woman's figure she discovers locked up in the wallpaper, and whom she decides to set free.
