International Trade

             The issue of international trade and how it effects employment is an issue that needs to be addressed in the face of changing times and globalization. Globalization has impacted unemployment rates in a positive and negative way. It has created millions of jobs throughout the world. But even with these jobs being created, unemployment is still a major problem. International trades have resulted in some reduction and lose of domestic employment of low technology, and low skilled jobs to cheaper foreign labor. But yet is has increased the demand of higher skilled workers. The problem facing the Government is that we must find a way to stay completive in the face of Globalization, but yet protect the employment of its citizens.
             Due to international trade, domestic employers to remain competitive have to seek to improved efficiency; which means incorporating new technologies to improve efficiency, to remain competed. This has resulted in reduction of employees, or companies moving to another country. Domestic unemployment also rises because of globalization when poorer sectors of the domestic market are unable to compete with a global market. The argument is that governments should try to protect these particular groups, by restricting trade or capital flows, to secure jobs at home. Opposing opinions are, this approach might help some in the short-term, but ultimately it is at the expense of the living standards of the population at large. One solution is the Governments should pursue policies that encourage integration into the global economy while putting in place measures to help those adversely affected. Government policies that are needed to help accomplish this are: Education and vocational training, to make sure that workers have the opportunity to acquire the right skills in dynamic changing economies; well-targeted social safety nets to assist people who are displaced during the transition.
