Counselling versus disciplinin

8. Counselling, not disciplinary action, is the most effective technology for social control in schools. Do you agree? A certain degree of discipline is required in schools to enable students to receive their education. I believe that disciplinary action, coupled with counselling would be able to provide a certain degree of social control in schools. However, I believe that there are both advantages and limitations for both methods, namely counselling and disciplinary action. To develop this view, I will examine both advantages and limitations of both methods in a Singaporean context. Before plunging into my argument, there are a few terms to be defined. Firstly, I will define counselling as the process by which professionals or trained personnel try to change the mindset or thinking of juvenile delinquents. Secondly, disciplinary action consists of punishments, both harsh and mild, being used to deter and prevent repetition of the offence, by the offender and potential offenders. Lastly, social control in schools is the control of the school population so as to prevent the social structure in schools from degenerating into chaos. Counselling is essentially a method of trying to maintain harmony within the school populat

This includes the use of disciplinary action in maintaining discipline in schools. The student is not humiliated in front of his peers and thus he may be more receptive to what the teacher has to say, therefore he could change for the better. If caught, these students would have to endure days of investigations by school authorities. Taking primary schools for example, students are cowed into behaving properly by keeping quiet in the presence of the discipline master. Therefore, in a Singaporean context, I believe that counselling is slightly more effective in maintaining discipline in schools. They are less likely to misbehave themselves in social situations, thus disciplinary action is not that common. Counselling could be used for students who commit minor offences, for example, tardiness or copying during tests or examinations. It is obvious that counselling would not be effective for "hardcore criminals", for example students who are part of a secret society, or students who participate in gang fights which not only disrupt the social harmony of the school, and also the social harmony of the country. As a result, primary school children meekly submit to the whims and fancies of their teachers. Secondly, since the nature of the offence and resulting disciplinary action warrants public attention, most students would be aware of the severity of such an offence, thereby preventing any potential offenders from committing the same offence. Thus, counselling would provide an avenue for students to recognise that they have committed an error, so they would be able to mend their ways. In a previously mentioned example, certain students may resort to dishonest means in order to succeed, to best their classmates in tests or examinations. Once the virus is deleted, other files are safe. It also consists of mild punishments for example, detention.
