Othello: The Tragic Hero

             Othello proves to be a tragic character in many ways. As a general of the armies in Venice, he is a respected man of noble stature. Although he is racially different from the Venetians, his proficiency as a soldier and leader is valuable and necessary to the state, and he is an essential part of Venetian civic society. Because of his high position, Othello is a proven powerful figure in his society.
             Although he is a dominant figure in his society, Othello has a tragic flaw. When Iago begins to trick Othello into thinking his wife cheated on him with Cassio, he did not hesitate to believe Iago. Without speaking to his wife about the accusations, Othello develops hatred and jealousy towards Cassio. At the end of the play, when Othello gains the courage to kill his wife, she does not know the accusations against her. As he smothered her to death, Desdemona realized the lies Othello was fed. Othello's undying trust of Iago leads to the untimely death of his wife and his ill-fated suicide.
             Because of his trusting nature with Iago, Othello slowly disproved himself as a dignified leader. He grew more and more emotionally unstable with each lie that Iago told him. When Iago suggests that Desdemona had never loved him, Othello became depressed. His mind became filled with thoughts of adultery and hypocrisy. As these thoughts became more prominent in his mind, Othello was convinced that murder was the only solution to his problem. Once he was a calm and rational man, but, now, Othello is plotting to kill both Cassio and Desdemona. Othello's murderous intentions made his reputation as a general suffer and eventually drove him mad.
             At the end of the play, Othello comes to realize the truth. After he smothered Desdemona, Emilia informs him that Roderigo is dead, not Cassio. Othello begins to notice something peculiar. He explains he killed Desdemona because she was unfaithful to
