He subsequently fell in love with her cousin Mattie, who had been called upon to relieve her of her wifely duties. She expresses that she has hired a girl to come live with and assist her and that Mattie's services are no longer needed. Ethan's actions display fogginess of the brain triggered by a love-filled heart. She eventually began a routine of closing herself in her bedroom, shutting Ethan out of her life ignoring her housekeeping duties. The love that grew between she and Ethan was purely accidental and not pre-meditated. Then, again following his heart, Ethan suggests doing it again, this time aiming for the tree that stands in their path; hoping to end their lives and leave the world together. Against Zeena's wishes, Ethan insists upon taking Mattie to the train station. Only out of true love could a man marry a woman that so dedicatedly cared for his dying mother. Along the way, Ethan suggests they stop for an impromptu sled ride in the snow. Ethan's immediate instinct was to hide it until he could repair it. Zeena allowed these problems to drive a wedge in the marriage she shared with Ethan. As if this weren't enough, Ethan then makes a spontaneous decision to end his own life just for the sake of dying with the woman he loves so dearly. While Zeena was away, visiting a doctor, Mattie and Ethan broke a beloved pickle dish of hers.
