High Noon
High Noon, a movie directed by Fed Zinnemann, used a whole set of techniques he inherited from other filmmakers to make his point and help get the story across. We will be looking at Narrative elements, camera/editing techniques, and elements of presentation. One of the film makers that influenced Fred Zinnemann is Robert Flaherty. Flaherty wrote Zinnemann a letter in 1931 and as a result Zinnemann received a job at MGM. Flaherty influenced Zinnemann in many ways while he worked there, but on that stood out to me is how Zinnemann learned to be uncompromising and to defend what he wanted to say, and not let anyone tell him differently. The reason this stood out is because I saw this in High Noon. The movie is presented in a way that was out of the norm for the 1950's. Usually movies ended with happy ending, with the marriage and then riding off into the
Instead this movie starts out backwards. Making him look Confident, and unstoppable. Which I am sure threw a lot of people off back in the 1950's. But towards the end of the movie, he is beat up and the camera starts looking down on him. I like how it starts with all the towns' people wishing the newly wed sheriff well as he retires and leaves town. The most effective shot in my mind is where Kane walks to the street and the camera zooms out showing how alone he is. The only one on the streets is him. This song is played throughout the movie and definitely helped put a point across. The way Zinnemann had will Kane going all over town asking for help, and the reasons the towns people give a fairly legitimate and by the way this is put across to the viewer kind of puts them in the persons shoes being asked. This different angle of the camera puts across to the viewer that he is loosing his confidence in the people of the town and his self of steam. It is funny how will Kane made the town respectable and fixed it up. Overall I would say this movie was excellent, because of the way Zinnemann presented the narrative elements, camera/editing techniques, and elements of presentation. The Marriage and ride off into the sunset happens at the beginning of the movie. They talk about how he cleaned up the town, and when word that Frank Miller is returning to town from jail, everyone that was supposedly his friend turned their backs when he needed them most.
