             The title itself gives a real feel for the movie. It's a jagged scary and dark word that sets an over tone for the movie. Psycho begins with the normal and draws us steadily deeper and deeper into the abnormal; it opens by making us aware of time. Marion Crane and Sam Loomis are talking about their relationship and why they can't get married due to financial issues. It ends with a situation in which time has ceased to exist; Norman Bates sitting talking to himself. The central meaning of the movie can be culled in the first part of the plot, right through to Marion's murder and disposal in the far swamp. The movie is heavily influenced by German expressionism and this can be seen through the heavy use of shadows. Hitchcock's classic is considered by many to be one of the greatest movies of all time and for good reason. The use of mise-en-scene, such as the use of the shower curtain, the stuffed birds and even the hotel, develops this dark and jagged classic.
             Within the first part of Psycho, the most meaningful scene is the interaction between Marion and Norman, even though he appears only minutes before the murder. Their personalities and backgrounds could be labeled as opposite, yet they share differences, and simultaneously, likenesses. In this comparison they point to morality: how, in shades, the apparently pleasant can in nature be evil, and vice versa. Psycho may be a film about manifested human frailties, opened by inner and outer conflicts. What cannot be repeated too often is the importance of stressing this by the use of black and white film. Its quality is stark, holding differences in sharp contrast; always giving life, or a story about some element in life, a grainy and harsh truth in a more open analysis, which makes the traditional themes of the horror genre native to it.
