The Crucible
The play 'The Crucible' targets the audience to look deeper into the manipulation of people's opinions resulting from one individual's accusations. In this play The Crucible; the values of truth, honesty, respect and integrity are seen as most important. Yet the authority figures in the community are presented to have none of these qualities at all. The small town of Salem sees Christianity and the Bible as dominant parts of everyone's lifestyle and where the word of God is the basis for most community actions. The play shows how manipulation by groups of individuals can influence community members to discard their religious beliefs and to outcast and in this case, kill innocent beings. The main character Abigail, although young, proves to hold the ability to control and convince the community that alternative practices were being performed in Salem. Abigail craved attention from John Proctor, but did not receive the confession of love she wished he would share with her. ABIGAIL: "I look for John Proctor that took me from my sleep and put knowledge in my heart! I never knew what pretence Salem was; I never knew the lying lessons I was taught by all these Christian women and their covenanted men! And now you bid me tear the
" Act Three, Page 93Rebecca Nurse held many positive characteristics similar to Proctor's. HALE: "I denounce these proceedings!" PROCTOR: "You are pulling Heaven down and raising up a whore!" HALE: "I denounce these proceedings, I quit this court!" DANFORTH: "Mr. Rebecca put aside her own needs for those of God and often found herself acting as a peacemaker with her calming words easing the angered male characters. So Abigail took advantage of the town of Salem plotting her revenge, her spitefulness was aimed at Elizabeth Proctor, John's wife. This is where Abigail showed her extreme power by using her Uncles place in society to voice her accusations and gain her position in Salem. I think we ought rely on the doctor now, and good prayer. His respect in the community of Salem would have continued even after his death. Proctor was seen as a respected man in society, although his private life held secrets which only Abigail and his wife Elizabeth shared. Although she was not believed by many, Abigail was never exposed as a liar. In the sight of the congregation she were twice this year put out of this meetin' house for laughter during prayer. However, in the play the attitudes and values of the community which are set by the church are questioned and manipulated by females to convince the court to achieve their ambitions. Rebecca's loyalty towards the church and her religion saw her as a well-respected and sensible woman of Salem. Proctors ability to hold his head high and stay honest throughout the play reflects how he was seen as a good character. Parris, I think you'd best send Reverend Hale back as soon as he come.
