fortinbras' revenge
Revenge has always been one of mans baser instincts, and will remain a common driving factor throughout time. In Shakespeare's tragedy Hamlet revenge is a reoccurring theme. Although many strive for the acquisition of their vengeance only young Fortinbras can truly be considered successful. Fortinbras' success can be most easily noted through the analysis of Hamlet and Laertes. Both Hamlet and Laertes strive to avenge their father's deaths, and although both were unsuccessful, much can be learned further their failures. Young Hamlet spends the bulk of the play in thought over how to best slay his uncle and put his father's spirit to rest. Although she is successful in killing his uncle he died shortly after ends so he is not successful in the acquisition of his vengeance. His downfall of course, is similar to his tragic flaw in that indecision and inaction had stolen from him too many opportunities to successfully avenge his father. Laertes on the other hand sought to avenge his fathers death by the slaying of Hamlet, and once again despite his success in the action, his vengeance remained out of his grasp fore he died just moments before his objective came into fruition. This conversation of course leads to Hamlets discovery that his father's soul is not at rest, thus spurring his conversation with his father, which transcends the grave. It is then that the reader comes to realize that even at the end hamlet made no decision. Of course upon arrival at the castle Fortinbras was met with a dismal sight to seen the entire royal family slain. None could say that this was an easy victory for the young prince fore none, not even his own uncle approved of his siege on Denmark, and so deifying his own king Frotinbras " sharked up a list of lawless resolutes" ( I, I, 98) with which attack the castle. Hamlets indecisions do not become fully apparent until after the play is over. Also must he have been in shock to learn that with young Hamlet's dying breath leaves the thrown and al it's people in the hands of the foreign prince. If Hamlet had been waiting and longing for this dual it would be safe to assume that he had been practicing which he later confesses to. this is shown in Act I scene two as Hamlet mutters aside " a little more than kin, and less than kind" ( I, ii, 64 ). No longer a sinner in Shakespeare's Fortinbras has become the epitome of wrath. Fortinbras was neither rash nor impassionate. To hell with allegiance, vows to the blackest devilConscience and grace to the profoundest pit!I dare damnation. This blind hatred eventually becomes the end of Laertes fore Hamlet was good, so good it would seem that he stuck Laertes with his own poisoned blade. This is also the place where Hamlet seals his own fate as he swears to avenge his father as he proclaims " o cursed spite, that ever I was born to set it right" (I, v, 188). Instead young Fortinbras remains quite calm and always clear on his mark.
