Cold War and Lvls of Analysis
The Cold War stands as a unique conflict, crucial in understanding contemporary international relations specifically of interest to the United States for three main reasons. First and most obviously, the Cold War involved the United States during a time which actually reflects our contemporary protocol with dealing in international relations. Second, the same countries that served as actors during the Cold War are basically the same major powers on the world stage today. Finally, the Cold War was quite multifaceted. Because of the cause, length, weaponry, and leaders who led the direction of the conflict, the levels of analysis stand to help explain how this conflict came about and evolved on interstate and intrastate levels (since both interstate and intrastate conflict occurred during the Cold War). In order to explain how (or perhaps if) means of employing the levels of analysis have changed since the Cold War, it would be appropriate to investigate the causes of the Cold War by means of the traditional triple layer of analysis and then compare both interstate and intrastate causes after this conflict. As we discussed in class, intrastate conflict occurs between people who may look the same and have similar goals but have some kind of glaring ideological differences. When employing the levels of analysis here, perhaps that one could say that the systemic reason for the conflict was the US's desire for there to be democracy in Iraq while some would argue that domestic and individual causes point more to the US economy and Bush. Major sums of money were sent not because the United States feared for the wellbeing of Greece's people or government, but because Soviet influences would cause a domino effect whereas communism would spread to all corners of the world if it was not contained. In 1994, Robert McNamara, Kennedy's secretary of state, met with past government officials of Vietnam and gave his reasons for interfering with their war. Although this description of the Cold War and its causes is short while not including the later phases of the war, it is most important to understand that the levels of analysis all reveal different causes for both intrastate and interstate conflict which in many cases overlap. Out of this came communication between world powers (specifically the United States and the Soviet Union).
