             The story about a black family's troubles in the play "A Raisin in the Sun" by Lorraine Hansberry gives a good sense of their struggles while aspiring to achieve their goals during the time period that Hansberry grew up. Many families could relate to these reoccurring themes in the play, because it was a time of growth and independence in this country and many people were being faced with similar issues. Specifically, as the African American experience developed during this time period, Middle America changed dramatically as it included this new segment of the population. A middle-class black family forcing themselves to live in a predominantly high-class white neighborhood in the south side Chicago post WWII would be a volatile change for the economic status quo, or the social order, in this time period only. After this era of America's history, the involvement of assimilating all types of culture to all parts of society has quickly become the norm, with the exception of a few certain areas that have a tightly knit sense of community for specific cultures that have chosen to segregate themselves.
             Encarta encyclopedia defines the term culture as: "the patterns of behavior and thinking that people living in social groups learn, create, and share." These groups of ideas are all different for people that come from different backgrounds. This is true in this play because the Younger family, who are the main focus of the story, have different patterns of behavior and thinking than that of the families who lived in the neighborhood of white families that they have moved into.
