when is it addiction?

A state of addiction is reached when people habitually or obsessively surrender themselves to a substance or a behavior. Sometimes the person with the addiction uses that substance or behavior to escape pain or reality. Yet, they seem to only hurt themselves or others but still continue to worsen their addiction. There is even some debate on whether addiction is a disease or a compulsive habit. The body can become highly dependant on substances like drugs or alcohol. Sometimes it's hard to believe that a person can be addicted to shopping or the Internet, but it does happen. People have probably heard lots of explanations or excuses for addiction patterns. "Alcoholics have a different body chemistry." "Smokers go into withdrawal if they don't get cigarettes." "People who are really overweight just eat too much. It's as simple as that!" "Watching so much TV is just a habit you fall into. It's like an addiction after awhile." We seem to get these opinions from th

People you know are probably already hooked on something. What we need to realize is that we all have the capability to become an addict. There's also a chance that nothing is wrong, and the addict simply stumbled into it. Getting a drink may be more important than going to work or finding someone to sell them cocaine may be more important than picking up the kids after school. Some addictions seem to depend on the current situation that the person might be in, past experiences of the person, the psychological and genetic background of the addict and the certain object that he or she is addicted to. Usually, depression is the motivating factor behind most addictions. Heroin addicts sometimes become dependent on alcohol when they stop using heroin. Some people stand out because they develop a number of habits or addictions. This human tendency probably lies at the heart of all addiction. The tendency to develop strong, long lasting habits is built into everyone. Do they do anything on a regular basis? Think about eating too much, bad driving habits, a nervous laugh that bugs other people, smoking, or sitting around too much instead of exercising.
