In his verse, Frost described natural scenes with vivid imagery, celebrated ordinary rural activities, and mused upon mysteries of existence, subtly developing dramatic tension he frequently left unresolved, ambiguous, and open to interpretation. Positing that humanity must constantly struggle against chaos and bewilderment, Frost stated that poetry, like all human-made forms, is a "momentary stay against confusion." His finely-crafted poems reflect this belief through thematic explorations of profound philosophical issues, the beauties and terrors of nature, conflicts between individual desires and social obligations, and the value of labor.
