In his verse, Frost described natural scenes with vivid imagery, celebrated ordinary rural activities, and mused upon mysteries of existence, subtly developing dramatic tension he frequently left unresolved, ambiguous, and open to interpretation. Positing that humanity must constantly struggle against chaos and bewilderment, Frost stated that poetry, like all human-made forms, is a "momentary stay against confusion." His finely-crafted poems reflect this belief through thematic explorations of profound philosophical issues, the beauties and terrors of nature, conflicts between individual desires and social obligations, and the value of labor. Frost is particularly noted for his mastery of form and rhythm, through which his poems evoke distinct New England speech patterns. In order to achieve this quality he termed "sound of sense," Frost structured his verse in strict metrical, rhyme, line, and stanzaic arrangements and experimented with such conventional forms as blank verse, sonnets, lyrics, and masques.
