Meaning of Epistimology

"Philosophy asks the simple question. What is it all about?"-Alfred North Whitehead. The Greek meaning of philosophy is the love of wisdom. Epistemology includes three basic beliefs: empiricism, rationalism, and Kant's synthesis. These three concepts bring together ideas to explain Epistemology. The first belief is empiricism. Empiricism explains that knowledge only comes through experience. Thomas Hobbs, John Locke, and David Hume were famous empiricist. Their basic belief stated that all knowledge comes through experience and the A-Posteriori theory. This theory translates to post experiences. These men fe

This throws out a greater idea with things that exist outside experiences that cannot be proven. lt that most people learn and gain knowledge, as they grow. Descartes believed that the only thing he knew for certain was that he was able to think, "I think, therefore I am". There are different levels to each concept these men conceived. Kant's belief says that knowledge is limited to things that people experience, but they must in space and time. All these ideas work together to try and teach people about knowledge. Since knowledge is only limited to experience, then it is limited to the science of the natural empirical world. Other things will never be desired or confirmed because no one has experienced them. People have their own views on knowledge and truth, but epistemology helps decipher the true meaning. Immanuel Kant brings both of these beliefs, a prior and a posteriori together. So what is Epistemology? Epistemology wants to know what is knowledge and how can people determine its truth. "A prior" basically translates into knowledge known prior to experience. Rene Descartes is the most famous rationalist who came up with the theory of "a prior". Empiricism, rationalism, and Kant's synthesis are all ideas in epistemology.
