Why should we study Shakespeare

"Romeo and Juliet is one of the world's best-known love stories. For over 400 years, readers and theatre audiences all over the world have been moved by this tragic story of love." TARA STEELEThe study of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, in schools, is an extremely beneficial exercise. It teaches students about many issues to do with human experiences. It is more than just a story of love. It is a play of contrasts; love, hate; joy, sorrow; light, dark; youth, age; life and death.Love in Romeo and Juliet was a significant factor in Shakespeare's play. The most prominent 'love' relationship was the love between Romeo and Juliet. Their love was surreal, yet we all yearn for love at first sight with its fairytale feeling.Love, as a topic, has great appeal and relevance to youth today. At their first meeting, Romeo and Juliet's mutual attraction and their play on words is perfectly captured through the Shakespearean language."Romeo: If I profane with my unworthiest handThis holy shrine, the gentle sin is this:My lips, two blushing pilgrims, ready to standToo smooth that rough touch with a gentle kiss.Juliet: Good pilgrim, you do wrong your hand too much,

Interestingly enough, this love brings to light the absence of love between Juliet and her mum and dad. It also shows the time in which the movie was set. The inclusion of violence in Romeo and Juliet is extremely useful in today's curriculum for students. This is healthy, as some students may either be in need of compassion or simply enjoy watching the development of such friendships. Although the use of poison may be suggestive to students with negative ideas, is also outlines the consequences of such a tragic and destructive action. Some students may feel a sense of 'belonging' whilst interpreting this friendship. The friendship between Mercutio and Romeo was so strong and meant so much to them that it was worth risking their lives for. in front of the church! The policeman's speech shows us how unjust both deaths were. The nurse can be alikened to a mother or grandmother today. They pray, grant thou, lest faith turn to despair. Once you appreciate the beauty of his work you do not just become a knowledgeable person, you become a better person, yourself. Romeo attempts restraining Mercutio to create peace but fails.
