MYTHS, LEGENDS AND EPICS
Differentiate between a Myth, Legend and an Epic. Provide an example of each from literature for children.Myths, legends and epics are an integral part of children's literature. They are useful tools in literature because their content is exciting, varied and captivating. They expand on children's sense of fantasy. They are also tools for introduction and integration of history and geography. Myths, legends and epics are also ways in which stories are passed down from generation to generation. They are not always true history and as educators we would ensure that our children can differentiate between fantasy and true historical events.Mythology involves the telling of what I prefer to term "grown up fairy tales"., where fascinating gods drive through the heavens in chariots and play games with the helpless humans below. This tale is filled with jealousy, envy, greed and revenge. This is a tale about two brothers Kasim (who became rich by marrying a wealthy woman) and Ali Baba. My brief account undoubtedly brings out the heroism of Odysseus and his fascinating adventures. In anger Polyphemis throws rocks in the direction of the ship and vows to call on Poseidon, god of the sea, his father to avenge him. Ali Baba has to avenge his brothers death and when the thieves are invited to his home under false pretences, Ali Baba cunningly overpowers the thieves with the help of his clever wife. Kasim is caught by the thieves and put to death. Midas wished that everything he touched should turn to gold and soon he found himself starving in the midst of plenty. Well-told versions of this story are suitable for children without delving into the complex explanations about mythology. The most popular of all mythology is that of ancient Greece and Rome. Arthur and his round Table was created by people who had a complete belief in God and their King and pioneers building a nation created giant heroes with Bunyanesque strength. And when good times came the gods were thanked. Epic tale like legends bring out the ideals and feelings of the people. In Kalevala, old Finland's Land of Heroes when Louhi swears to have vengeance on the people of that land by taking away the sun and the moon but, Vainamoinen, through playing his kantele, brought the sunshine back to the Land of the Heroes.
