Effectiveness of Jiu-Jitsu
My friends and I gathered together around the TV to enjoy this new fighting tournament called the Ultimate Fighting Championship. "The UFC is a lethal combination of over 30 disciplines of fighting, including boxing, judo, karate, kickboxing, jujitsu and wrestling"(Wuebben 132). This event has no rules and no weight classes; this is UFC 1, the first of its kind in the US. The best Kung Fu fighters, the best kick boxers, and the best brawlers in the world came together to prove they were the best. They proved the greatness of their specific discipline until they ran into the slight 6'1", 180 pound Royce Gracie. Royce's opponents consistently outweighed him by more than 50 pounds. Each one of us would have bet that Royce would lose each of his fights. Royce's first opponent is a professional kick boxer, named Art Jimmerson. Royce shot in (like a wrestler would do) and got the full mount (in which you sit on your opponent's chest, pressing his back to the ground). Jimmerson taps-out (taps the mat or his opponent to show that he quits fighting) before Royce even gets a submission (a technique that would require an opponent to tap-out). Jimmerson said he gave up because he didn't know what to do.
My Gracie Jiu-Jitsu instructor, Tosh Cook, says, "if one of the two fighters wants to take the fight to the ground, the fight will go to the ground. "Helio himself suffered from an inexplicable weakness that resulted in severe fainting spells as a small child and caused the family physician to caution Helio's parents and older brothers not expose young Helio to any form of exertion whatsoever, even school. Origin Gracie jiu-jitsu was first discovered by Helio Gracie (father of Royce Gracie) in the 1930's. When Helio was about 14, he moved in with his older brothers who lived and taught jiu-jitsu (a mix of Japanese and Brazilian jiu-jitsu) in a house in Botafogo, a borough of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The winner must knock the opponent unconscious or make him quit. The winner was decided by submission only. They were trying to choke out each other. But before we do that, I should explain: What make Jiu-Jitsu uniquely superior?Grappling All martial arts, to be considered martial, must answer to the following question. From there I took the fight to the ground, where I was constantly looking to improve my position, advancing step by step toward my goal of getting to a position from where I could finish my opponent with a submission hold. (Gracie, Mastering 51)The Gracie Way The simple, yet highly effective, combat proven strategy along with my refined Gracie technique came to use in my first MMA fight. That single event would not be enough to say that his Jiu-Jitsu was superior. We ask your support for Judo Master Helio Gracie! (Kimura 2004) Helio, 180cm tall and 80kg in weight, went on to enjoy a wonderful career in fighting, and was know as "The Worlds Toughest Man". The solution to this unique problem was the invention of mixed martial arts events. Kato was in good condition, and threw Helio a number of times. He focused on leverage and using your legs to control the opponent.
