Zimbabwe's government has a tight hand over the press in their country, keeping Zimbabwe from becoming a democratic country.The Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation (fig 1.2) has been suspended form the Commonwealth Broadcasting Association for a year. This follows criticism of ZBC's conduct during the recent Presidential Election. ZBC, the Government broadcasting organisation, has been a member of the CBA since 1980. Attacks on independent Daily News:One of the staunchest critics of the government is the independent Daily News. Broadcasting in Zimbabwe:MISA (Media Institute for Southern Africa)-Zimbabwe has been in the forefront fighting for the liberalisation of the airwaves in Zimbabwe. On 5 June, police beat up and arrested a Daily News reporter and four students who were demonstrating against the privatization of catering and accommodation services. The court said that the monopoly of the ZBC was therefore invalid in so far as it vested in the ZBC the exclusive privilege of carrying on a broadcasting service in Zimbabwe. The press of Zimbabwe is the mouthpiece of the ruling government. Reporters are now required to apply for press accreditation at least a month before an intended visit. The emergence of the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) as a genuine contender to the Zanu-PF party, and a poor economic record have created deep insecurity in the government.
