"So God created man in His own imageAnd God saw every thing that He had made, From the beginning of time, writers and philosophers alike have been setting Man apart from beast, but what is it that makes this partition factual? It is widely believed that Man, by nature, has the capability of consciously contemplating a situation and determining whether the outcome is "right" or "wrong," that Man reacts to a situation by ruling of outlook rather than stimuli, and that Man has more priorities than self-fulfillment; such as religious obligation, parental duties, and cooperative behavior amongst his own kind through social contract. Though these positive characteristics that separate us from our other earthly inhabitants seem superior, these same characteristics may lead us to our own destruction, as well as that of our own planet. Author Mary Shelley discusses the issue of Man's nature through her greatly renowned novel Frankenstein, in which a knowledge crazed scientist is determined to put himself on the scientific map by creating a human-like
In one point of the story, the creature gets an insight into what it means to be man. So, when man engages in an aggressive activity such as war, capital punishment, or deportation, it is because another man who has fallen from grace threatens him, and forces him to do so to maintain social harmony. " The creature cannot sense the love of his creator because, unlike man, his creator has made him not in his own image, but of the image of a less than human beast. Though Man's state of nature may always seem constructive, there are certain urges within our being that drive us to destruction. In Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, Victor, a knowledge hungry scientist, explains to an explorer why he should end his voyage because his has led to self-destruction and pain: "You seek for knowledge and wisdom as I once did; and I ardently hope that the gratification of your wishes may not be a serpent to sting you, as mine has been. If another dog were to possess an object and Muggsy were to want it, he would go about obtaining it in a violent way showing no concern for his fellow dog. " Through the examination of these well-respected minds as well as my personal experience, it is made clear that certain unique characteristics separate Man from animal. Within the story, the creature was an abnormally large and strong being who had great strength, but no intelligence or morality. As one observes a pet, it is obvious that there are tremendous differences between the observer and the animal. The creature killed for no reason and could not control his rage and ruthless behavior. Unlike animals, humans react with a sense of emotion, reasonability, and prospect to what the outcome of their actions will lead. A man, by nature, would see the object, contemplate his need of the object, and use his conscious ruling to determine whether he should take the object or not, and decides how he should obtain the object.
