            Merck continues to be one of the leading pharmaceutical companies that have made various contributions to society over the past century. With its cosmic development of tehnology, this company has been able to continuously provide the public with sufficient medicinal products. Merck embraces their reputation to be able to supply the people with the highest quality of goods and customer support with today's newly developed advances. Merck holds a great deal of pride in their ethical standards and practices, which is able to be done even more efficiently with their expertise and use of technology today.
             Dating back to the 17th century, Merck is known today as the oldest pharmaceutical and chemical company in the world. It was founded by an apothecary (an old name for a pharmacist) by the name Friedrich Jacob Merck in 1668. During which time Friedrich J. Merck purchased an old warehouse, later known as the Engel-Apotheke, or the Angel Pharmacy, in Darmstadt Germany.
             It was not until 1816, when Heinrich Emanuel Merck, the grandson of Friedrich J. Merck, took over the pharmacy and began the journey of moving to a much larger scale of production with an industrial factory. Previously in his training, E. Merck had already began an extensive research process of investigating the chemistry of natural plant substances. His research continued in depth with his ownership of Engel-Apotheke. As a result he was able to successfully isolate and prepare pure alkaloids. Alkaloids consist of a class of extremely efficient plant components known for their medical usefulness which caught the attention of the scientific community at the time. The large scale production began in 1827 when E. Merck began to offer his alkaloids to other pharmacists, chemists, and doctors. This gradual process caused the establishment of a pharmaceutical and chemical factory.
