Contradictions of the South Africa Apartheid System

             Thesis: That South Africa Apartheid system contained within it certain inherently contradictory features that led to its own downfall.
             Apartheid is not a new thing. Ever since Dutch colonists landed in 1652, "Blacks" and "Whites" have lived apart in South Africa. Officially started in 1948 when the Afrikaner Nationalist party came to power, apartheid is a system of racial laws devised to "Preserve and promote a white majority over a black majority." It has a lot of opposition and it led to an international boycott of South Africa because of it. Apartheid's central features included racial classification of all South Africans; separate political units for each race with coloreds and Indians were given limited, and blacks none, a political voice in the national government; separate living areas for each race, and labor laws that reserved certain jobs for specific races. It is important to note, however, that many apartheid goals, such as total urban racial segregation and independence of African "homelands" were not achieved. To achieve apartheid's goals of separatism, the South African government forcibly relocated many black South Africans to remote and isolated areas of the country that lack infrastructure and resources.
             Apartheid was running against general world consensus in the post-imperialistic era. Other countries cited the success of civil society expressing its moral outrage by boycotting South Africa. Countries felt that cooperating with South Africa was like collaborating with the apartheid regime and so began to boycott South African for trade and even for sporting tours. In May 1961, South Africa relinquished its dominion status and declared itself a republic. Later that year, it withdrew from the Commonwealth, in part because of international protests against its official stance on apartheid.
