Triage - Guilt and Forgiveness

"You are looking for forgiveness, but, as you have discovered, that is something no person can give you..."How is the notion of guilt and forgiveness explored in the novel?-----------------------------------------------------------------Scott Anderson's novel Triage conveys a deep and meaningful notion of guilt and the ability for forgiveness. Mark, the central character, breaks his profession's rule of thumb, "keep it all separate". All the while he believes that he is fine, and his guilt continues to grow inside him. When his actions cause his best friend Colin to be killed, Mark goes into a state of denial, his mind "keeps it all separate" and his internal built-up guilt causes a mental and physical breakdown. Joaquin shows Mark that there is only one person that will ever have the power to forgive him. any people, and he is riddled with guilt about it. Joaquin understands the guilt felt by Mark, and questions him about him wallowing in his own guilt, surrounding himself with it to make people feel sorry for him. " Here he hints that he knows that Mark is not telling everything about what happened on the mountain. " Joaquin shows Mark that you can never be forgiven for these terrible things, the only thing that can forgive you is God, and failing that, you must learn to live with what you desperately wish to forget. However, everyone tells him that it was not his fault. Mark finally alludes to what was hiding inside his unconscious memories and he opens himself up to the pain. Joaquin consoles him saying "It's a very complicated matter to be a survivor. This pain is increased when he sees Colin's wife and daughter, and with the increasing of the pain, comes the increasing of the guilt. Forgiveness is found when the truth about the guilt is finally presented. After Joaquin tells Mark this, the reader catches a glimpse of Joaquin's secret, it seems that he, too, has something that he is keeping within, something that he has never forgiven himself for.
