             Practice Essay 1 – Atticus's Values and Beliefs
             In a town of social group division through prejudice and intolerance, Atticus teaches his values and beliefs to Jem and Scout by not only teaching them but by actually setting the examples. Atticus has many values and beliefs such as mutual respect for the children, Tom Robinson and Women. He also shows courage for example when he sits outside Tom Robinson's cell and stays calm when the lynch mob arrive and what's more for accepting the role to defend Tom Robinson which also brings the label of him being a 'nigger-lover.' Atticus is also a very fair man, he treats his children equally and does not beat them he also does not stereotype his children or any other person, he doesn't mind if Scout is a Tomboy. Atticus is unlike most adults in Maycomb in that he does not show prejudice; this is shown in many ways such as him letting Calpurnia run his house, which shows he respects coloured folk. Through Atticus, Harper Lee illustrates to the reader that not all 'folks' in Maycomb and in the South are prejudice and intolerant
             Atticus teaches courage to Jem and Scout superbly, he is not afraid to stand up for what he believes is right and does what he feels is best. He teaches Jem and Scout about courage by actually setting the examples and also by verbally telling them for instance when he declares to the children "I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand." He sets his examples well for the children, this is shown when he takes on the case of Tom Robinson even though he knows he's lost before he starts, "...It's when you know you're licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what."
