Pride and Prejudice : A Male D

Pride and Prejudice : A Male Dominated SocietyWhen Jane Austen wrote Pride and Prejudice, which was first published in 1811, she could not have been aware of the scrutiny that her book would be placed under in today's modern society. Written in 19th century England in the romantic era, Jane Austen wrote about what she knew. In a time where men controlled most things, she chose to write a novel predominantly about women, their place in society, and the roles that they played. In that particular era, when men dominated both the social and political world, women would not have given a thought to the structure of their lives. It was common for a woman to grow up with her life's only goal being to be secure herself a suitable husband. The only career option a woman had at that time was to become a governess. In today's society, where women are free to wear what they like and aspire to become involved in a great many careers, it would seem that in comparison to the women in the novel, we take a great many things for granted. Upon reading Pride and Prejudice, my first impression was that the main women characters in the novel were strong women, and that it seemed that men had very little influence over them. So being asked to do

This is what a woman 'well educated'. It is ironic to think of, as these women were, in all senses of our meaning of education today, uneducated. To the people of today where women are almost becoming men's equal, this novel will seem somewhat unbelievable. a feminist reading of Pride and Prejudice, I found myself lost, how could I show the gender struggles of women when I had found none. In this case it is true that it is not Lydia who was forced into marriage, it was George Wickham who payed the price. Women attend schools, with males, and they are given the opportunity to further themselves in any career path in which they see fit. Yet again here is an example of a woman marrying and furthering herself in practically the only way that is available for her to do so. As Mr Bennet's estate has been entailed away, Mrs Bennet knows plainly that upon Mr Bennet's death she will be cast out of their home. It shows how a male is expectant that he should get whatever he asks providing that it is a reasonable request based upon the conventions, which funnily enough, have been designed by the males of that era. Here again is evidence of a male minded society. Lydia is a perfect model on which to show that, in the era of the book, a woman's reputation is like 'pure gold'. Here is the first instance where the male simply expects the female to conform and do what he asks of her. A woman and her children can be thrown out onto the street if the male (the male that owns the house that is) passes away. Elizabeth has always stated that she would never marry for any other reason than love.
