Critque of Horror Websites
In today's modern world film studios are using many different methods of promoting there up coming movies, theses Medias include: television, radio, newspapers, magazines and the internet. All theses media's allow the viewer to see an image and read or hear about the film. The film studios have gone one step further and made websites that allow the audience to interact with the characters of the film and know what the film is about by visual and audible representations.Websites are all about visual appeal, layout and content. By using these features we can design criteria to critically analyze the website. The criteria that was designed has three sections: Using these criteria we were able to critically analyze websites. Two were chosen to be analyzed Finding Nemo and Van Helsing were chosen to be analyzed.Filmic Qualities (Symbolism, Motifs, Specific Selection of Images / Sounds)There is a little symbolism displayed on the first page of the finding nemo website but in terms of this film as it is a fun loving film no symbolism is really necessary. Apart form the blues that represent tra
nquility of the water, this convays the felling of happiness and fun and the shadows in the water (still animation), and the same dialogue that is repeated. But in Van Helsin If you enter you have to close the additional page that it comes up on to get back to the main page this only applies to a few of the links, but other pages come up with in the one page with all the working bottons at the bottom of the page. The small object in his hand spins arround every few minuets, the vampier people move arround with in the picture. The nemo DVD is shown at the top of the homepage as well as the 'Academy Award' which it has won at the bottom of the homepage this obviously promotes and gives off a good vibe about the movie. In finding nemo you never leave the one main page it's all opend up on the main page where as when you click on a link it opens it up in another web page, this is handy because you just need to exit that page and your back at the main page. Van Helsing displays Van Helsing uses most of the same interactivity themes as finding nemo including: Wall papers, screen savers, traliers, downloads and pictures. (to the right)What special interaction features (technological) are used to target users? (How and Why?)The games are used to attract people as well as the taking underwater photo option as it is interesting and something out of the normal for people to do. People are able to both be amazed by the colors, the effects and overall presentation but also by how you are able to become involved through the photo galleries and links. The Van Helsing website is also good as there is enough detail on the page to be entertaining, but there isn't too much so it makes it hard and unpleasing to view. The wording and genre used is simple so that all audience whatever age can understand all the information that the site has to offer. An dthe Browns, Blacks and Reds are maintained on each page to show symbolic meaning to evil, dispare, disarster. In Van Helsing there is a lot of symboilism displayed, most of this symboilsm is more indepth than the symbolism displayed on the finding nemo website, as Van helsing is a vampire movie there is a lot of symbolism in the coloures displayed, a lot of blacks,and dark greys are uesd this symbolises that evil and that disarster lerks nearby, the ues of the pictures of the human bats in the background of the picture subconciously tell us tht the movie is about vampires/bats. Van Helsing is much different there is enough infomation persented to tell you what the story is about and a few filming aspects, and some background reading/history but not a lot more is presented. Navigation (What do they use to navigate? Visual / Audible Codes)The designers of finding nemo have used/created many buttons to help you navigate where you want to go or what you want to do.
