The title of his novel, Cloudstreet incorporates very succinctly the narratives major thematic concern, as it is evocative of higher realms. The imagery of the word "cloud" itself conjures a world beyond the terrestrial, beyond the here and now, and it is this metaphysical aspect of life that the reader is positioned to privilege. The title shares its name with that of the house that the Pickles and Lamb families live in, and because of this connection, the house obviously contains some supernatural qualities. The apparently all-knowing character Fish Lamb, is the novels narrative intelligence, who is also seen to be somehow elevated, on an ethereal plane. The houses' spiritual interaction with the natural world is understood by the reader, in the dramatic transformation in the image of the house. The title is also linked to the novel via characters' actions and dialogue in the house, informing the reader that the house posses some supernaturally evil characteristics. The imagery of the house in the closure of the novel implements the reader to visualise it in a completely new light, exposing the spiritual change in the house, and so linking the novel to its title. After careful consideration the implication of, and the meaning of the conjoining of the words, the reader complements the cleaver and insightful technique used.
