             Using the Vigilant Decision-Making Model
             Decision-making models are formal, step-by-step, ways of selecting one option over others. They are basically the same as the method used for choosing a tall, non-fat, caramel macchiato at Starbucks. It is only that the process itself is slowed to a more precise and formal level. When the question is serious, where the stakes are high, and the consequences of the decision are likely to linger for many months or years a decision-making model
             The steps are intuitive, even to those who have never used such an approach to decisions before:
             First, the challenge is appraised. This allows the decision maker to operate from a position of strength. We should strive to see as objectively as possible, being careful to sidestep fallacious thinking. "Problems occur when you underestimate the demands of the task or postpone tackling it out of reluctance to look at the issues involved," (Pathway Evaluation Program). Taking a thorough look at the problem at hand will lay the foundation which supports actions to tackle it. In this case, knowledge truly is power.
             After a thorough assessment, the next step to making a decision using this model is self-appraisal. Most people think they know themselves. Often, though, we see not what we are, but what we hope to be, or what we would like others to see. This hampers our effectiveness because nothing lasting can be built on delusions. We have to be honest if we are to achieve. "You must understand your goals, values, strengths, interests, and abilities if you are to make the career decision that is right for you."
