Native American People

The Native American people were extremely mistreated as a result of settlers from other countries moving in. Promises were made to them that to this day have not been kept. The unjust treatment of them has led to the diminishment of their people, land, and resources. The u.s. government is just now trying to correct the situation. In 1787 the Northwest Ordinance was created. It stated that they were to be treated with the "utmost good faith" and that "their lands and properties shall never be taken away without their consent. By 1812 they had already taken over Indiana. The Native Americans started fleeing to Florida to escape American authorities. In 1819 the United states purchased Florida from the Spanish. After Florida was sold, the Indians were moved off their land to designated areas where they could live called reservations.

The wars started when Americans tried to force Indians onto reservations thousands of Indian men women and children were killed. This act did not really benefit the Indians. It authorized he president to negotiate treaties and remove the remaining eastern Indians to lands west of the Mississippi. It stated the each Indian family was to receive an 160 acre farm out ouf reservation lands. Indian tribes were once again brought under federal funding with the promise that federal control would be lessened. From 1860s to the 1890s the Plains Indians Wars were taking place. By the 1940's almost all native Americans had been moved to lands west of the Mississippi. Federal agents used threats, bribes, and liquor the make sure the Indians agreed to the one- sided treaties. Indians win these cases paving the way for the creation of gambling operations on reservation land. It also said the each new land owner who abandoned tribal practices and adopted the habits of "civilized life would be given American citizenship. This act ended land allotments and returned unsoltd land to the Indians, authorizd tribes to form corporations and launch businesses, and provided elected tribal councils with significant power In 1970 President Richard Nixon recommends self determination for Indians. As a result lof the surplus the Indians lost 90 million out of 140 million acres of reservation land. The government removed thousands of Indians, some in chains, ona trip known as the "trial of tears" many people died. All this changed when they began to find gold on their land.
