Martin Luther King was born on January 15, 1929 in Atlanta, Georgia. His father was a pastor of the Ebenezer Baptist Church and following in his footsteps, King was ordained a minister in 1948. Martin studied for degrees in theology and divinity and obtained a doctorate from Boston University early in 1955 before beginning his involvement in civil rights activities. The first activity towards civil rights in which Martin Luther King was involved was the protest that soon became known as the 'Montgomery Bus Boycott'. The boycott was a protest that began in order to stop Montgomery's segregated bus system, and resulted in just that. The black leaders of the time formed an organisation that would run the boycott in order to stop the segregation of black and white people on public buses. Martin Luther King was asked to be president of this group and in doing so began his work towards achieving civil rights for the black people of the time. In 1963 Martin and his associates launched a massive demonstration in Birmingham Alabama- one of the south's most segregated cities. In 1957 along with other black ministers King founded the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC). King's death sparked riots in over 100 cities, but in hindsight was a victory as a few months later Congress passed 'The Civil Rights Act' which prohibited racial discrimination in the sale and rental of most housing in the nation. Martin Luther King and other activists continued to fight for civil rights and by the 1960's; blacks began to take action as protests expanded. The movement had a major victory as in 1964 Congress passed the civil rights bill that Kennedy had recommended. Despite being the target of many terrorist actions Martin Luther King continued to promote non-violence and led many peaceful protests. This demonstration gained huge media coverage as police used dogs and fire hoses to drive back peaceful protesters. King and other civil rights activists then organised a huge march in Washington DC. King continued to campaign for civil rights by holding and attending a number of protests that demonstrated the need for these changes to be implemented. In 1956 the Supreme Court ordered Montgomery to provide equal, integrated seating on all public buses. Throughout this time he was arrested a number on various occasions and taken into custody for minor offences such as 'demonstrating without a permit'. This demonstration was later to be seen as Martin Luther King's most successful and well-remembered protests as he delivered his famous ' I have a dream' speech. The high point of the rally was when King gave his famous speech, which was said to have defined the moral basis of the civil rights movement. The success of the boycott won King national fame and from then on he was identified as a symbol of southern blacks new efforts to fight racial injustice.
