Ambition and its corrupting po
The world of the play established in Act One of William Shakespeare's Macbeth prepares responders for the theme of ambition and its corrupting power. The hero's, greatest weakness is ambition and is central to the whole conception and meaning of the play .This key concern can be clearly seen through the motivation of the character Macbeth by the weird sisters and Lady Macbeth ,the relationship between characters and finally, the responders positioning. The initial introduction of Macbeth is a person of great integrity, without overwhelming ambition. As Act One progresses, and ambition starts to dominate Macbeth, the responder witnesses the metamorphosis of an honest man into a ruthless murderer. This transformation is motivated by the predictions of the weird sisters and also the concurrent ambition of his wife, Lady Macbeth. The weird sisters were able to manipulate and motivate Macbeth by turning his secret ambition into reality. Macbeth was initially led to evil by the weird sisters predictions. The concept of becoming King, laid forward by the weird sisters opened Macbeth's ideas to the possibility that his dream of becoming a king was very much possible. The weird sisters also predict that Banquo's fami
Concomitantly, Banquo and Macbeth's relationship disintegrates from close faithful friends to Banquo's betrayal and ultimate death through Macbeth's ambition for power. The foundations of Ambition and its corrupting powers is first constructed by the weird sisters in the first act . Once the weird sisters made their prophecies known to the two men, tension begins to grow between the two as it becomes obvious that Macbeth is being corrupted by the thought of power. The emergence of this overwhelming ambition in Macbeth, lead inevitably to the destruction of his relationships with other characters. Lady Macbeth is so ambitious that she is willing to sacrifice her femininity and all human feelings for her desire for power ?Hot tender 'tis to love the babe that milks me: I would, while it was smiling face, have plucked my nipple from his boneless gums and dashed the brains out, had I so sworn as you have done to this. Macbeth is still unable to consider killing Duncan ?let not light see my black and deep desires. Towards the closing of the play Macbeth has a moment of anagnorisis when he realises that everything has been lost, the love, friendship and courage, the things most important to him- in his pursuit for power. She makes sure that Macbeth goes through with his promises to get them the throne. This ambition which possesses Macbeth slowly corrupts all of his feelings of love and friendship, turning him into a cold and blood thirsty murderer, and finally leads to his self destruction. He was loyal to his King, to his wife, and to his friends. The responder has been placed by Shakespeare to be able to see how this anagnorisis portrays the corrupting power which ambition holds. It is evident that a leading factor in the destruction of Macbeth was caused by his inability to stop. ? Even after the sisters prediction's of him earning the thane of Cawdor were right, it wasn't until he approaches his wife that she manipulates his mind enough to convince him to proceed with the malicious plot. She strengthens his ambitions and destroys his noble relationship between other characters he respects. Similarly, Lady Macbeth is responsible for promoting the ambition which was unleashed by the weird sisters.
