A Tale of Two Cities

             A Tale of Two Cities
             Essay
In the book A Tale of Two Cities, the story revolves around the French Revolution and the outcomes that result from it. In many instances, the story focuses mainly upon the lives of the French peasants and their way of life. When the book first begins, Charles Dickens created a sense of sympathy for the peasants. The were so poor that wine covered streets were a privelage to drink from. With many of the citizens of France in an impoverished state, it creates this strong sense of pity for them. As the book continues on though, the peasants start to take control of what once was a ruthless governent. When this happens, that once sympathetic feeling starts to fade away.
As the book starts out, you imagine all of the people of France being in this weak, pathetic condition. People are in fear constantly of being robbed or murdered. Crime runs rampant on the streets. Thousands of people are starving to death each day. It seems like the worst conditions that a country could ever have to endure. When Charles Dickens wrote the book, he was trying to make the reader have this changing viewpoint on the plot. At first when I first started reading the book, I felt a lot of pity for the French peasants. After a little while though, that thought changed dramatically.
As seen various times through history, power can corrupt. The peasants appear to be these helpless people with only intentions of good. After a little while it becomes clear that that isn't true. After overthrowing the opposing authorities, the peasants became bloodthristy criminals. They kill people with little or no reason. They invent new methods for killing people that are crueler than any previous ways. The gullotine is one of their inventions. Upon finding someone even slightly suspected of a crime, they kill them by means of the gullotine.
