Edgar Allen Poe Themes

Research Report: Edgar Allen Poe's TextsMy research objective was; to look at and compare texts written by Edgar Allen Poe; to examine common themes between the texts; to show how the texts related to the Author and how the author created the mood and atmosphere; and to explain the style and structure of selected texts. It is very easy to associate Edgar Allen Poe with thoughts of dreariness and darkness, and with good reason. Much of his writing does reflect those very downcast moods. Edgar Allan Poe's popular short stories, "Ligeia," "The Cask of Amontillado," "The Tell-Tale Heart," "The Murders in the Rue Morgue," "The Pit and the Pendulum", and "The Raven" serve as typical examples of his stylistic and thematic gifts. Although Poe's stories vary in their intensity, ideas, and characters, these examples particularly demonstrate his unique gifts of description, first-person narrative, and detail. His mastery of language and setting and his fascination with the workings of the human psyche, are reflected in this selected group of short stories and poems. What are the common themes in some short stories by Edgar Allen Poe, and how do they relate to him personally?

What techniques does the author use to build up tension in the texts to create the mood and atmosphere of the theme?"The Cask of Amontillado", has perhaps Poe's most forthright narrator, plot and his most common theme of secret burial. Poe's writings explore the state of mind of the person telling the story. The raven's "nevermore" fills him with despair, leaving him unable to lift his soul "from out that shadow. For instance, in his important and widely taught story, "The Fall of the House of Usher," Poe embellishes the fairly simple plot with the dense description of the house and grounds, and the feature-by-feature description of Roderick Usher and his ailments, so that the reader becomes convinced of the story's complexity. "Yet another area of Poe's life scrutinized by critics and readers was his psychological and emotional well-being, which also may have been influential in the writing of "The Fall of the House of Usher. " The narrator uses the same attention to detail as he describes the bridal chamber he designs for his second bride. "One aspect of Poe's life that may have been very influential in "The Fall of the House of Usher" was his drinking habits. The impact of death, which was prevalent throughout his life, was tremendous. The poem is peppered with words of darkness and fear - "dreary," "dying," "terrors" and so on. He uses these effective techniques to draw the readers along even though they know how the story will end. These features engage his utter love, not to say fanatic devotion. However, as a well-rounded writer, Poe gives the central character of the story, Dupin the detective, a voice that speaks in proverbs and wisdom, "Thus there is such a thing as being too profound.
