Pride and Prejudice
Pride and Prejudice/Bridget Jones' DiaryBridget Jones' Diary, the movie was produced in 2001 and is based on the novel by Helen Fielding. Bridget Jones' Diary is a contemporary transformation of the Jane Austen novel, Pride and Prejudice which was published in 1813. Apart from obvious changes such as language and dress code, there are five correlating themes between Bridget Jones' Diary and Pride and Prejudice; marriage, the similarities between characters, and attitudes towards women. One of the first issues made obvious early in both Pride and Prejudice and Bridget Jones' Diary is that of the importance of marriage. This is portrayed in the novel, with by the opening sentence, "It is a truth universally acknowledged that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in need of a wife". Moreover, it is further portrayed by the first section of dialogue, between that of Elizabeth's mother and father concerning the arrival of a particularly wealthy bachelor in the neighborhood, not far from the Bennet's family home. Mr. Bennet enquires, "Is he married or single?" to Mrs. Bennet's response, "Oh, single, my dear, to be sure! A single man of large fortune; four or five thousand a year. What
It is clear though, that some relationships were founded on love in the seventeenth-century, for instance Mr. This was the particular reason why the Bennet family was disgraced when Lydia eloped with Mr. Elizabeth Bennet, her mother and her sisters lived at Longbourn, the family home - solely supported by their father. Another theme made apparent is that of the attitude to women. Collins' later proposal as she sought to advance her social and economic status and was unlike Elizabeth, not a romantic. One of the most obvious similarities between Bridget Jones' Diary and Pride and Prejudice is that of the characters. The main characters of Pride and Prejudice share some of the same characteristics as those in Bridget Jones' Diary. Women were raised to be little more than housewives and child-bearers. Bennet's relationship was borne out of attraction and love, albeit the relationship subsequently became one of respect. a fine thing for our girls!" This clearly shows the need for a woman to be married at a young age in society at that time. Although there is two hundred years difference in society between the novel and the film, Bridget Jones' Diary still manages to convey the same issues of marriage, the similarities between characters, and attitudes towards women that are in Pride and Prejudice. This is apparent in Pride and Prejudice.
