Pride and Prejudice

             Pride and Prejudice/Bridget Jones' Diary
Bridget Jones' Diary, the movie was produced in 2001 and is based on the novel by Helen Fielding. Bridget Jones' Diary is a contemporary transformation of the Jane Austen novel, Pride and Prejudice which was published in 1813. Apart from obvious changes such as language and dress code, there are five correlating themes between Bridget Jones' Diary and Pride and Prejudice; marriage, the similarities between characters, and attitudes towards women.
One of the first issues made obvious early in both Pride and Prejudice and Bridget Jones' Diary is that of the importance of marriage. This is portrayed in the novel, with by the opening sentence, "It is a truth universally acknowledged that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in need of a wife". Moreover, it is further portrayed by the first section of dialogue, between that of Elizabeth's mother and father concerning the arrival of a particularly wealthy bachelor in the neighborhood, not far from the Bennet's family home. Mr. Bennet enquires, "Is he married or single?" to Mrs. Bennet's response, "Oh, single, my dear, to be sure! A single man of large fortune; four or five thousand a year. What a fine thing for our girls!" This clearly shows the need for a woman to be married at a young age in society at that time.
In the film, Bridget Jones' Diary, the importance of marriage is conveyed in the opening scene by Bridget's karaoke attempt of "All by myself", the title and lyrics of the song revealing Bridget's desire for a husband. This desire is also evident in one of the first of Bridget's lines, "It all began on New Year's Day in the 32nd year of my being single". Bridget refers to her age as not being how many years she has been alive, but how many years she has been a live without a husband.
