In this essay, I am going to analyse the characters of Shrek and lord Farquaad, and write about how the filmmaker uses different techniques to create an unusual fairy tale. In traditional fairy tales we expect certain characters such as an innocent beautiful princess, and a handsome young heroic prince. The film nearly always includes a villain to create the tension in the storyline, an ogre or some usually plays these roles kind of giant. These villains are played as a bad nasty creature that's normally out to eat the main characters e.g. the princess/pretty girl. The giant in the fairytale 'Jack and the beanstalk' introduces himself into the story with his famous line: 'Fe, fi, foe, fum, I smell the blood of an Englishman, be he alive or be he dead, ill crush his bones to make my bread.'This quotation shows that the giant is beastly and cruel, he tells people this, in hope of their fear of him, in comparison the prince in the tale of 'Snow white and the Seven dwarves' is the complete opposite. The prince comes and rescues the princess, sweeps her off her feet and they kiss while riding off into the sunset. Language is an important device, and I am going to write about how language can create the impression of good a
In contrast to Shrek, Lord Farquaad is cruel. When Princess Fiona leaves Shrek and goes inside, Shrek admits his love for her to Donkey. He has big ears placed at the top of his head. At this point Fiona had had enough, started to get annoyed and said to Shrek: 'This is all wrong, this should beith our first meeting, it should be romantic. He then starts mocking and teasing him, this shows that Lord Farquaad is a mean character and likes to tease, and doesn't match the stereotype character of a prince, as they are normally kind and caring and Lord Farquaad is defiantly not this. This swamp is a dump and is lived in by an ogre, this fits him well as from other fairytales we expect a horrible dirty character, even though this film is very different from other fairytales, Shrek is still quite dirty and we expect him to live in this way. He tries to make them frightened by shouting and roaring at them but they are not affected. I don't think that Shrek really can be that of a scary ogre, although he looks and is made out to be the villain, he has a good heart and every time he tries to be scary and frightening something always back fires. He wears long red robes to symbolise wealth and power. But the villagers looked more discussed than scared and still did not move. When Donkey refuses to listen to Shrek, ignores the 'beware of the ogre' sign, and follows him back to the swamp, he shows that Shrek can not be as bad as he is made out to be. Shrek and Donkey vist Duloc, to try and reclaim Shreks swamp from Lord Farquaad. Donkey repeatedly follows Shrek and never stops singing and talking. At this part the camera is focusing on Lord Farquaads feet and legs. Later on the gingerbread man makes a comment so Lord Farquaad throws him in the bin! Later in the film Shrek walks in on Fionas and Lord Farquaads wedding, Lord Farquaad shouts at Shrek and says:'Its rude enough being alive when no one wants you but walking in uninvited to a wedding!'This Shrek ignores and walks strait to the Princess, that quotation shows that Prince Farquaad is a very mean man.
