Briar Rose
The book I read was Briar Rose by Jane Yolen. This book was about A young girl named becca who always loved hearing her grandma tell her version of briar rose also know as sleeping beauty. When Beccas grandmother is dying she tells her the story she tells of briar rose is actually her. When Becca and her sisters were told this they thought nothing of it and just thought she was an old senile women who didn't know what she was talking about. But when an old mysterious box of clippings and pictures turns up they found out that whom they really thought there grandmother was is not true. Nothing was certain not her date of birth, not her country of origin not even her name. Becca had two facts about her grandmother one is she lived in a refugee camp in Oswego and another is her last address in Europe was a place called kulmhof which she is unable to find anything about. So Becca, who was the closest to her grandmother out of her and her two sisters, makes a deathbed promise to her grandmother also known as gemma because shana couldn't say grandma so she said gemma, that she will find the real story behind her grandmother. The next scene I picked is when Becca is sitting there with the box and she pushes her hand down on the box to get the imprint of the rose one her palm and then she kind of gets frustrated and then all of a sudden she hears he grandmother telling the story of sleeping beauty. The first song that I selected to open up the movie with was The Song Sleeping Beauty By A Perfect Circle. For this scene I picked the song Down In A Hole By Alice In Chains I picked this song because it's a very meaningful song and I feel the lyrics go really well with this scene. I found this novel to be a very powerful novel so I decided to make a soundtrack to a movie for my project and I felt I needed to have very powerful emotional songs to represent the book so here they are. And she sees the initials on his handkerchief are the same on the ring and then she thinks that he is her grandfather and then explains he is not but the ring is his and that he knew both her grandmother and grandfather. I felt this was a good song to set the tone for the movie because it had lighter type of melody and how the song talks about sleeping beauty and the opening scene is where Becca and her sisters ask there grandmother to tell them the story of sleeping beauty again. Next I chose Metallica's version of Turn The Page because it just pretty much talks about being on the road and stuff and that's how she was on a long journey to find out who her grandmother was and now its time to turn the page and move on with her life and her new knowledge. So Becca goes to kulmhof now called chelmno, and also meets other people who remember her grandmother. The next song is for the scene when they're dumping the dirt on her grandmother's grave and becca whispers "Good Bye, Gemma". ar contemporary of her grandmothers and finds out from her that kulmhof was like a concentration camp but worse it was it was an extermination. The next scene I picked is when Becca is on the phone with Harvey and she tries pronouncing kelmhof and there was a moment of silence and then he said "kulmhof" and he my god and she asks is it somewhere and he says its in the darkest regions of hell and she says I beg your pardon and he said its not even a concentration camp its and extermination camp, and she says so my grandmother was there and he says that's not possible my dear no one has ever escaped kulmhof Alive! So for this scene I picked the song Blitzkrieg By Metallica. I picked it because it talks about surviving a blitzkrieg and escaping from kulmhof would be like surviving a blitzkrieg. This is were she learns the truth and stuff and is really wear her journey ends and you would think she would be happy but it was more bittersweet for her and the that is why I chose the song Bitter Sweet Symphony By The Verve because it just pretty much sums up attitude about this after taking to potocki. The Next scene is when Becca talks to Josef Potocki and when she hands him the pictures and he starts crying and says "The dead come back to life so unexpectedly". Becca learns about all the horrific things that happened in during World War 2 and learns of the thousands of Jews that were killed at chelmno.
