Transcendentalism

             The philosophy of transcendentalism in highly based on the theory of intuition. In the movie, "Forrest Gump", there are many connections between Forest's character and the concept of intuition. Intuition is when you follow your heart more than your mind and act on your immediate reactions. Forrest Gump, a man full of compassion, love, and care, always does his best to help others, no matter what the situation. He often puts popular belief behind him in order to act intuitively on what is right. Although Forest's IQ is slightly below average, his transcendentalist lifestyle allows him to become a highly polished soldier, a "breaker" of the race barrier, a hero, and an overall leader.
             Firstly, Forrest shows great intuitiveness on the battlefield in the Vietnam War. After his regiment is attacked, Forest is told to retreat. After running clear of the gun shots and explosions, Forrest notices the other soldiers are not with him. Without thinking, Forrest runs back in search for his comrades. After bringing a few of his fellow soldiers to safety, Forrest notices his Lieutenant has fallen. Carrying the Lieutenant on his shoulder, Forrest brings him to safety. Although the Lieutenant wanted to die on the battlefield like his ancestors had, Forrest acted out of his heart, and saves him. What Forrest did for these soldiers was a pure act of courage. He risks his own life for so many others, and never even thinks twice about doing it.
             Secondly, Forrest crosses the strongly divided race barrier without even realizing it. Upon coming to school, Forrest notices a large group of students outside the doors. The first African American to ever attend that school is beginning her first day. However, many of the white students do not like this.
