The question of the ethics in genetic engineering goes beyond science and into the heart of societal morality. Genes in all living things have been known to mankind for hundreds of years, but it was not until the 1950's that the structure of DNA (Deoxyribonucleic acid) became known. Do to the extraordinary work of scientist like Crick and Nirenberg almost all of the lead scientist in breakthroughs regarding genetics during the 1950's and 1960's won Noble Prizes (New York Times/ News Service, 1). This first major breakthrough as a result of the Crick Watson discovery came in 1968 as Marshall W. The limited scientific knowledge of the time prevented the floodgate from opening, but the ethical implications of human genetic engineering would not vanish. In order to fully understand genetic engineering in humans in a holistic manner one must lunge into the past, present, and future of this scientific field. This groundbreaking discovery was due to the work of notable scientist such as Watson, Crick, Wilkins, Franklin (Wade, 1). lutionary scientific accomplishment, genetic engineering. The discovery of the structure of DNA in itself did not produce any new scientific concepts but it was an important catalyst in bringing genetics to the forefront of pharmaceutical and laboratory research. However, not all of these new scientific triumphs were looked upon with admiration, as many people believed that a floodgate of altercations in human makeup had been opened. Genetic engineering is becoming an issue not just in the United States but all over the globe.
